Volunteers/Unpaid Interns

Many divisions at UNC Charlotte engage volunteers or unpaid interns to do work for the University. These volunteers or unpaid interns are a valuable resource for the University. However, volunteers and unpaid interns are not considered University employees and do not enjoy many of the protections of employees, such as Worker’s Compensation and the State Human Resources Act.

It is important that each volunteer and unpaid intern understands the protections afforded, as well as the limits of those protections afforded, while doing unpaid work for the University. In addition, it is important that each volunteer and unpaid intern understands their obligations, such as compliance with University policies. Therefore, every University volunteer or unpaid intern should sign an Acknowledgement and Liability Release for Volunteers and Unpaid Interns.
