University Continuing Education Activities

University Policy:
201
Executive Summary:

The University extends its services to the community via University-sponsored continuing education activities. This policy guides the development and operation of continuing education programs by the University in collaboration with community partners.

Background

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte will extend its services to the community in many ways, including through University-sponsored continuing education activities.  This policy is intended to apply to the development and operation of continuing education activities by the University, acting alone or in collaboration with community or other partners.  It is not intended to govern conferences, seminars, workshops, or other activities that may be conducted in University facilities or on University grounds but that are not sponsored by a University department or other officially recognized University unit.

Definition

Continuing Education is non-degree-related, non-credit instruction designed for the personal enrichment or the professional and career development of participants.  Forms of instruction include, but are not limited to, short courses, certificate programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) frequently are awarded upon completion of these activities. Continuing Education may take place on campus, off campus, or virtually.

Policy

  1. All University-sponsored Continuing Education activities require the sponsorship of a department or other officially recognized unit of the University that assumes responsibility for the activity on behalf of the University.  Activities must be consistent with the mission of the University and the mission of the sponsoring department or unit.  Activities must be regularly evaluated in relationship to mission and effectiveness.  The School of Professional Studies (SPS) is a sponsor of University Continuing Education activities, and it is available to provide registration services for activities sponsored by other University departments and units.

  2. To ensure compliance with policies of the General Administration of The University of North Carolina and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, all Continuing Education activities that confer CEUs must be approved in advance by SPS.  SPS is responsible for maintaining, on behalf of the University, the permanent participant records that must document all such awards.

  3. When SPS provides registration services for another University unit sponsoring a Continuing Education activity, the terms of the arrangement must be agreed upon in writing and in advance, and such terms must specifically address matters of financial responsibility.

  4. SPS maintains summary programmatic data on University-sponsored Continuing Education activities sponsored by SPS and on those activities sponsored by other University units for which SPS has awarded CEUs on behalf of the University.  SPS is responsible for reporting these activities, as required, to the General Administration of The University of North Carolina and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
