Administrative staff are employed to conduct the affairs of the University. The use of administrative staff to provide support for private business or for personal correspondence is improper. The following are acceptable uses of administrative support provided that the work of the University is given priority and is not delayed:
- Professional correspondence;
- Production of professional papers;
- Employment of administrative support for the affairs of professional societies;
- Involvement in departmentally related professional organizations during work hours;
- Support of conference and workshops of professional organizations hosted by the University; and
- Community involvements in which the professional expertise of university faculty or staff is being utilized
Employees who have professional obligations are encouraged to project the amount of time to be allocated to these activities in order to ensure compliance with the Fair Labor Standard Act‘s regulations concerning overtime and to minimize the need for funding overtime.

These revisions were made to provide clarity and to add a paragraph informing employees who to contact with questions regarding the policy. The changes are minor and broaden the tasks administrative staff can provide for business that is not directly related to the university. The title of the policy was also changed from "Secretarial Time" to "Administrative Support for Professional Obligations."
