We're All in This Together: What the New Title IX Regulations Mean for All UNC Charlotte Community Members
Sarah Edwards, Associate General Counsel, and Dr. Michelle Reinken, Director of Title IX Compliance
The federal government issued new rules in May 2020 that govern how universities respond to incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault. As of August 14th, those new rules have become new policy at UNC Charlotte. Join us as we walk through the final Title IX regulations, explain how the regulations compare with the prior legal landscape, and discuss what those changes mean for UNC Charlotte's students, faculty, and staff. We will also discuss what effect (if any!) the results of the November 3rd presidential election could have on this area of the law.

COVID - Who Really CARES?

This session will discuss the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economics Security Act, or CARES Act, which allotted funds to provide fast and direct economic aid to individuals and organizations impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. More specifically, this session will cover the funds allotted to UNC Charlotte and how the University is using these funds.

Do You Have My Back? Employee Liability Protections and Rules on Secondary Employment and Other External Commitments

This session is intended for all categories of university employees. We will begin by discussing situations in which the university would be liable for an employee's conduct and provide them legal representation and indemnification, and other situations when the employee would be personally liable for her/his conduct. In addition, secondary employment scenarios and other outside-of-work commitments will be presented to illustrate best (and worst) practices, as well as compliance with University policies and related ethical considerations.

What to Expect (from UNC Charlotte) When Students Are Expecting: Where Title IX Meets the ADA

This session will provide guidance on serving and supporting pregnant and parenting students while being mindful of navigating the nuances of Title IX and Disability Services implications in the classroom. Special attention will be given to addressing documentation, accommodations, and resources.

Challenges and Opportunities: How the Law Impacts the University's Diversity & Inclusion Efforts
Sam Sears, Associate Vice Chancellor and Deputy General Counsel; T’Ajai Carrington, Higher Education Legal Fellow; Yvette Huet, Director for the UNC Charlotte ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity Office and Professor of Kinesiology
The presenters will discuss diversity and inclusion initiatives underway within Academic Affairs and to examine those initiatives within the complicated regulatory framework that informs how our diversity and inclusion programs are structured. The panelists will review applicable law, including Title VII, the Equal Protection Clause, and relevant case law, as well as discuss the implications of several Executive Orders that impact these efforts. The panelists will also discuss an Executive Order issued recently by the current administration, regarding workplace training in this area.

Faculty Briefing: New and Revised Academic Programs - Navigating SACSCOC, U.S. Department of Education and UNC System Requirements Successfully
Presented by Christine Robinson, Executive Director, Accreditation and Assessment, and Leslie Zenk, Assistant Provost. Panel Members: Johnna Watson, Associate Dean for Graduate Enrollment Management and Funding; Jody Cebina, Director, Distance Education & Summer School; and Susan Burgess, Chief Compliance Officer
This briefing will provide an overview of the interplay between SACSCOC, U.S. Department of Education and UNC System requirements and their impact upon the approval of new academic programs and changes to existing ones. The session will cover recent changes to the course and curriculum review process, the basics of “substantial change,” how “significant departure” is determined, and considerations for establishing new off-campus instructional sites. The panelists will offer advice on the timing of submissions and the use of “backward planning” so faculty may avoid unnecessary approval delays.

Join the presenters as they discuss two legal powerhouses, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the North Carolina Public Records Act, and what happens when the two laws clash. Will a student's right to privacy or the public's right to know win the day? Can the university still make discretionary judgments about whether to release certain student information? We will explore how the North Carolina Supreme Court recently answered these questions and what else might be on the horizon.
